Structure of Improvisation
Understanding How Tango Is Built So You Can Truly Improvise
Many dancers believe improvisation means simply knowing a lot of figures. But real improvisation comes from understanding how tango is built.
Once you recognize the underlying structure of movement, you stop memorizing sequences and start creating them in real time.
This class focuses on learning to see tango as a system of elements and connections. When you understand how patterns are constructed, you can recognize them instantly on the dance floor, modify them, break them apart, or reshape them to fit the moment.
Instead of remembering choreography, you begin to read the structure of the dance.

What You MUST know
What We Work On
This course explores the building blocks that make improvisation possible.
We analyze common tango patterns and reveal how they are constructed so you can quickly recognize and adapt them.
Topics include:
• How tango figures are built from simple structural elements
• Recognizing recurring movement patterns inside complex sequences
• Understanding “chunks” of movement that appear across many figures
• Learning how to modify patterns without breaking the flow of the dance
• Changing direction, timing, and dynamics within a structure
• Breaking sequences apart and recombining them in new ways
The goal is to help dancers recognize structure quickly and adapt it instantly, allowing for real improvisation on the social floor.
Who This Class Is For
This class is ideal for dancers who:
• Feel comfortable with fundamental tango vocabulary
• Want to stop memorizing sequences and start understanding how tango works
• Want to improvise with clarity instead of relying on patterns
• Are curious about the mechanics and logic behind tango movement
Recommended for Intermediate and Advanced dancers, or motivated Pre-Intermediate dancers who want to deepen their understanding of tango structure.
Why This Matters
When you understand structure, everything changes. Figures become flexible material instead of fixed choreography. You begin to see how movements relate to each other, how they can transform, and how to adapt them instantly depending on the music, the space on the floor, or your partner.
Improvisation stops being mysterious. It becomes a skill.
A Different Way to Learn Tango
This course is about understanding how tango works so you can create movement freely and intelligently. Once you begin recognizing the structure behind the dance, improvisation becomes natural. And tango becomes much more interesting.
