Meet Your Guides

Anita & Hernan

As a kid, I wanted to be a ballet dancer but my Mom just laughed at me and said, “You can never be a ballerina with ears like that.” But I really, really loved dancing. Despite the ears. I got hooked on partner dancing. Competitions. Team performances. Eventually, I was an art conservator by day…and a ballroom dancer by night. I’d be on the scaffolds all day, working on the monumental murals at Rockefeller Center, Museum of Natural History in New York or Cyclorama in Gettysburg…and then change out of my uniform and hardhat, put on a fancy outfit and heels and run to where my 'real' life began - dancing. Classes, dance parties, practice time. The dance studio was my safe place. Then something amazing happened... One day I got invited to the Argentine Tango class. I knew nothing about Tango. That's ok they told me– “you just follow.” This was a surprise to me…in ballroom classes, it was very structured. If someone missed a class, they had no idea what was going on. There was no “just follow” in ballroom dance. Tango was different. It was based on improvisation and communication. I had never taken a single Tango lesson before - yet I was dancing. My partner was telling me without words where we were going and what we were doing. Nobody was counting! Yet, we both floated to the music. Embracing each other and moving in unison like we had danced together years. To my surprise, my next partner was the same way. The improvisation. The communication. The culture. I fell in love with Tango…and never looked back! I went on to meet my husband Hernan, who was a professional tango dancer who has performed in dance plays, films, festivals and productions around the world. Now I'm doing something I never imagined when I graduated with an MA in Art Restoration. Together, Hernan and I teach Argentine Tango using our revolutionary, structured and logical approach. To us, tango is not just a dance. It's the way to experience the world, connect with people, communicate your ideas clearly and be able to listen and hear. Now we teach Argentine Tango not just as a dance…but as a philosophy of life. With over 33 years combined experience, Hernan and I are masters at dancing Tango but more than that…we are masters at TEACHING TANGO. Our logical, supportive educational approach has been recognized around the Boston area and beyond.

FAQs

  • We are pretty busy. How much time do we need to dedicate?

Join the club! Most of our students are super busy as well. That’s the beauty of Tango Passport…the bite-sized videos and activities can be done on your schedule. Most of them are 6-10 minutes long. We find that our students make the most progress when they spend around 2 hours per week…so that’s what we recommend! That being said, however the course is self-paced and is adaptable to your needs!

  • But I don’t have a lot of room to practice…can this work?

Our students were amazingly creative during COVID and learned to Tango in VERY small spaces. Perhaps that means moving a table to the side of the room, or sitting your computer on the kitchen counter…but most people can make it work.

  • I’ve never danced before! Can I do this?

Absolutely. The great thing about starting from scratch is that you don’t have to “unlearn” anything. We teach in a logical, progressive way that will get you to the dance floor…no matter where you are starting.

  • Who is this for anyway?

Tango Passport is in English but we have plenty of visual aides that will support you if English is your second language. In terms of age, it doesn’t matter if you are 18 or 80, if you can walk, you can tango. Likewise, it doesn’t matter who your partner is…as long as you can identify a leader and a follower, you can tango!

  • Do I need to be flexible?

No! Posing, fancy moves and dancing like an acrobat are in the movies. Argentine tango as we teach it focuses on body awareness. You’ll gain flexibility as you progress.

  • Can I do this if I’m totally out of shape?

Yes! If you can walk, you can tango. Tango will help you get into shape in a way that is gentle and fun. It is a great option that’ll help get you moving.
