Tango Endings
Every tango tells you it is about to end. It says so in the phrasing, in the bandoneón, in a change you have heard a thousand times and never consciously registered. Most of us hear it about two bars too late, which is why so many tandas finish with a small scramble instead of a landing.
Steve Darmo puts it in numbers: in a four-hour milonga you dance roughly 80 endings. That is 80 chances to land something, or 80 small scrambles.
Steve Darmo spent three years on exactly this question. He went through 1,700 recordings from the Golden Age orchestras, worked out how they actually finish, and found that almost all of them land in one of nine types. Then he wrote the book on it.
He is coming to us for two days at the end of October to teach what he found.
The weekend is built in two halves. Friday is about the music from the other side of the booth: how a night gets built, and what is actually in these recordings. Saturday is about your feet: recognizing endings, and dancing them.
And in the middle of it, on Friday night, we are throwing a 1000/20 milonga with Steve DJing. You are invited to that too.
Steve Darmo has written two books about this music.
The first is ‘The Ultimate Tango DJ Handbook: Over 1,000 Tandas for Social Dancing’, which is the Friday workshop. The second is ‘Tango Endings: Learn the 9 Common Argentine Tango Song Ending Types, How to Anticipate Them, and 50 Musical Steps to Dance Them’, which is Saturday.
He is also an engineer, which explains a lot. Faced with the fact that tango songs end and most dancers are surprised by it, he did not shrug and keep dancing. He spent three years listening to 1,700 recordings from the Golden Age orchestras and classified how every one of them finishes. Nine common types. Three strange ones, which he calls the Oddball, the Surprise and the Fake.
He is careful to say he does not count while dancing, and he is not asking you to either. The point of the research is the opposite: once you know what the endings sound like, you stop doing arithmetic and start recognizing.

The ending is not a surprise. It is announced, usually several bars early, and every orchestra announces it differently.
This workshop builds the intuition. How to recognize that a song is closing before it closes. The signature endings of the Big Four, D'Arienzo, Di Sarli, Troilo and Pugliese, and what each one is asking you to do. Concrete ways to dance them.
You stop guessing and start arriving.
Pre-Intermediate and up. No partner needed, we rotate.
Tango Endings I: Hearing It Coming
Saturday October 31, 11:30am to 1:00pm | 90 minutes
Everything past the Big Four. The distinctive endings of the other major orchestras, and how vals endings work differently from tango, which catches almost everyone. Including the three that break the rules: the Oddball, the Surprise and the Fake.
Then the larger skill underneath all of it: taking something you hear and turning it into something your body does. Less about the final note, more about musical detail becoming movement.
Pre-Intermediate and up. You do not need Workshop I to take Workshop II, but they are built to work together.
Steve stays for the practica afterwards, so you get three hours to try it with him in the room.

Che Tango Practica runs right after, and Steve will be there. Not teaching, not DJing, just around. So you can try the endings while they are still fresh, and keep asking him the questions that only occur to you once you are back on the floor.
This is the part people skip and then regret.

Tango DJ Fundamentals

Most dancers never think about who chose the music. The few who do usually end up working it out alone, one practica at a time, over several years.
This is the foundation done properly, in one sitting. Equipment and software. What makes a tanda hold together instead of being four songs in a row. Choosing and using cortinas. And the hardest part, which is reading a room and shaping four hours of energy while the room keeps changing underneath you.
Steve wrote The Ultimate Tango DJ Handbook. This is that book, taught by the person who wrote it, in a room where you can argue with him about it. If you are serious about starting, it is years of trial and error compressed into an evening.
Small group, so it stays a conversation rather than a lecture. Includes the talk and the milonga afterwards.
One (signed) copy of the book is included in the TANGO DJ FUNDAMENTAL WORKSHOP. So is the lecture and entry to the 1000/20 Milonga.

A Pre-Milonga Lecture
Steve spent years with the orchestras and the lyrics while writing the book. This is 45 minutes on what he found.
What the songs are actually about. What was happening in the room when they were recorded. The details sitting inside music you already know by heart and have never once looked at directly.
No dancing, nothing to prepare. Come at eight, listen, then stay for the milonga.

We are spending this whole weekend with a man who listened to 1,700 tangos to find nine endings. It seemed wrong to give the party a name you could just read.
Dress code: two colors, half and half. Down the middle, top and bottom, left and right, however you want to split yourself. Fifty-fifty. Pick your two and commit.
No Halloween. Save the costume for the events the day after.
And the part that is not in code: this one matters to me. It is a round number; it comes around once, and the only thing on the list I actually want is a floor full of people I care about. Come and let me see your face in the room.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Steve is teaching privates on Friday afternoon and Sunday, November 1.
$150 per hour for one person or a couple. $60 per person per hour for groups of three or four, $180 minimum.
Slots are limited and the Sunday ones tend to go first.

QUESTIONS
Do I need a partner? No. We rotate in all workshops.
What level do I need for the Endings workshops? Pre-Intermediate and up. If you can dance a tanda at a milonga without counting, you are fine. Not sure? Email us and we will tell you honestly.
Can I take just one of the two Endings workshops? Yes. They are built to work together but each one stands alone.
Do I need to dance to come to the talk? No. The talk is about the music, not about moving. Non-dancers are welcome.
I only want to DJ, do I need the dance workshops? No. The Friday DJ workshop is completely separate and requires no dance level at all.
What should I bring to the DJ workshop? Your head and good ears. A laptop might come in handy.
Refunds? No refunds, but we will give you credit toward lessons at Ultimate Tango.
