A Weekend with Marcelo “El Chino” Gutiérrez

The Architecture
of Tango

Marcelo “El Chino” Gutiérrez teaches tango from the inside out - revealing the structure, mechanics, and musical intelligence behind every movement.

We are excited to welcome Marcelo “El Chino” Gutiérrez to Ultimate Tango for a special weekend dedicated to the structure, musicality, and mechanics of Argentine tango.

Known internationally for his clarity, depth, and grounded teaching style, Marcelo brings a unique perspective shaped by decades of study with legendary tango masters as well as formal training in ballet, choreography, and movement analysis. His workshops reveal how tango grows from simple elements - balance, weight changes, pivots, direction, and musical phrasing - and how understanding those elements transforms the way we dance.

Throughout the weekend, Marcelo will guide dancers through the mechanics, musicality, and structure that make tango come alive - from the power of the standing leg to the logic behind improvisation.

The program is designed as a progression: beginning with grounding and body mechanics, exploring musical phrasing and movement structure, and expanding into circular movement and the expressive power of the walk.

The weekend also includes a special Che Tango milonga with Marcelo as DJ, offering a chance to put these ideas directly into practice on the social floor.

Join us for a weekend of learning, exploration, and dancing with one of today’s most thoughtful tango teachers.

SCHEDULE

Saturday - May 23, 2026

4:30 – 5:45 pm
Grounded Tango – The Power of the Standing Leg

In tango, everything begins with the standing leg. Balance, stability, pivots, and connection all depend on how clearly we organize our weight and how we interact with the floor.

In this workshop, Marcelo “El Chino” Gutiérrez explores the mechanics of grounding - how the standing leg supports movement, how the free leg releases naturally, and how dancers generate movement from the floor rather than from the upper body.

Through simple but powerful exercises, Marcelo will help you refine balance, improve pivots, and discover a more stable and effortless axis.

This workshop is less about steps and more about how movement is built from the ground up - a key element of Marcelo’s teaching method.

Why you need it:

Most tango problems start in the standing leg:

  • unstable pivots

  • heavy leading

  • unclear weight changes

  • difficulty maintaining axis

When the standing leg works correctly, tango becomes easier, smoother, and far more expressive. This class gives you the physical foundation for everything that follows.

Sunday - May 24, 2026

🗓 11 am
Pauses & Phrasing – Rhythm vs Melody in Tango

Tango music is rich with contrast. Some dancers hear only the rhythm. Others follow only the melody. The most interesting dancing happens when we learn to move between both.

In this workshop, Marcelo explores how dancers can interpret music through pauses, phrasing, and timing. You’ll learn how to recognize musical structure, when to move with the rhythm, when to follow the melody, and when the most powerful choice is simply to pause.

Through guided exercises and musical examples, Marcelo will help you transform musical listening into clear movement choices.

Why you need it

Many dancers feel stuck dancing at one speed or moving continuously without variation.

Learning to play with pauses and phrasing allows you to:

  • create tension and release

  • highlight musical accents

  • dance with more expression and personality

  • make your partner feel the music more clearly

Musical interpretation is what transforms movement into tango.

🗓 12:30 pm
Structure of Movement – How Figures Emerge from Simple Elements

Tango is often taught as a collection of figures. But in reality, every movement in tango is built from a small set of simple elements: steps, pivots, weight changes, and direction.

In this workshop, Marcelo “El Chino” Gutiérrez reveals how tango structures actually work. By understanding how these fundamental elements combine, dancers begin to see how many familiar figures naturally emerge from the same underlying mechanics.

Instead of memorizing patterns, you will learn to recognize the structure behind movement — opening the door to real improvisation.

Why you need it

Many dancers feel trapped in sequences they have memorized in class.

Understanding the structure of movement allows you to:

  • improvise with confidence

  • create variations naturally

  • adapt movements to any musical moment

  • understand what you are dancing instead of copying shapes

This workshop changes how you think about tango.

🗓 2:30 pm
Circular Tango – Giros, Direction & Flow

Circular movement is one of the most dynamic elements of tango. Giros allow dancers to navigate the floor, change direction, and create continuous flow within the embrace.

In this workshop, Marcelo explores the mechanics of circular movement: pivots, axis control, leader displacement, and the relationship between the dancer in the center and the dancer moving around it.

By refining these elements, dancers gain better control of turns and discover new ways to transition between linear and circular movement.

Why you need it

Giros appear in almost every tango conversation on the social floor.

Improving them helps you:

  • navigate crowded milongas

  • create smoother transitions

  • improve balance and pivots

  • expand your improvisation options

Understanding circular movement dramatically expands what is possible in your dance.

🗓 4 pm
Walking Like a Tango Dancer

The walk is the heart of tango. Every movement grows from it.

In this workshop, Marcelo focuses on transforming ordinary walking into true tango walking. Through attention to weight transfer, intention, grounding, and musical timing, dancers will learn how subtle changes in the walk can completely transform the quality of the dance.

Rather than adding complexity, this class refines the most essential movement in tango.

Why you need it

Many dancers search for new figures when the real power of tango lies in the walk.

A refined walk allows you to:

  • communicate more clearly with your partner

  • dance with greater musical sensitivity

  • move comfortably in crowded spaces

  • create elegance without complicated steps

When the walk improves, everything in tango improves.
