Tango in Lockdown: 3 Reasons Why Dance Helps

We understand that it may have been a while since you’ve put on your dancin’ shoes...or really any shoes besides slippers in the last 8 months. And sure, your favorite tango bar, or Milonga, may not be fully open yet, or it might be in the process of going back into a quiet shutdown. But that doesn’t mean tango needs to fall by the wayside. Quite the opposite, lockdown can be a time to perfect your skills or even introduce the art of tango to your significant other. Regardless of your motivations, dancing the tango throughout this stressful time can have some major benefits, and Ultimate Tango is here to help you get back into practice

Instant Stress Relief

Has there ever been a time when the world has been so collectively stressed? With a global pandemic, economic worries, and restricted freedoms, there are numerous ways to feel life’s strain at the moment.

At its core, tango is a meditation of movement. It allows the body to fall into a subconscious flow by being deliberate with your movements and body. Feeling this break from reality and getting lost in dance is an incredible way to allow negative thoughts to slip from your mind – even if just for a moment or two.

Staying Active and Positive

Many of us have turned to at-home workouts and online videos to stay fit and active during lockdown, but don’t let the graceful nature of dance trick you into thinking it’s not a workout in itself. Tango is a fantastic way to keep moving while you're at home, and it can also help to support a positive mindset.

Scientists have actually proven that dancing tango can reduce anxiety and stress. Two Australian universities showed that after just one month the study’s participants reported decreased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It is an ideal mashup of how dance, and tango, can help your mood and lockdown outlook.

Connecting with a Partner

We say partner, but there are a couple of different ways to interpret that, both of which are pro-tango and can have some positive effects on your psyche during the quarantine. Many of our usual social interactions have been seriously restricted this year, so why not ease your way back into human interactions with your dance partner?

Tango is a dance that’s very up close and personal so if your dance partner isn’t someone who lives in your household, we’d recommend getting Covid testing before seeing them again. However, once you’ve safely reconnected, you and your partner can brush up on your dance steps and enjoy some much needed social time.

Since most studios and Milongas are closed or operating under tight restrictions, don’t be afraid to get creative with your rehearsal stage. A portable speaker and an outdoor setting is a great way to safely tango these days.

An alternative idea is to teach your significant other a few new moves if they aren’t already your tango partner. If they’re a tango beginner it's a great way to reinject some fun into the relationship and share a subtly intimate activity together. Either way, it could be a great opportunity to connect, have fun, and remind each other why you’re doing this lockdown thing together in the first place.
