We can see a great need for Milonga and Vals classes. However we have to accept that one cannot learn Milonga or Vals in one workshop. They both require as much effort and curiosity as Tango does and so we are looking for 8-12 couples at minimum INTERMEDIATE level (completed Intermediate if you are taking our program) that will be interested in weekly classes and can make the commitment to attend every week. Of course the special circumstances from time to time are understandable.
The first edition of Closed Milonga Class (January – June) generated great interest and was a smashing success. I’m sure you can see those dancers in the Milongas. The new edition of Closed Milonga Class will allow new members to join our closed group.
We will spend about 2 months discussing Milonga fundamentals such us: musicality (time, double time, syncope), cadencia characteristic for Milonga rhythm, difference between Milonga lisa and traspie, characteristics of traspie with exercises just to mention most important topics.
After that we can move on with new material, new Milonga steps and new combinations unknown yet to existing members as well as the newly joined. This way the existing members can continue taking the class (with small review) and new members will not feel left behind.
Most people that start dancing Tango don’t know that the Tango has 3 different musics: Tango, Milonga and Vals. Some simply don’t hear the music and don’t even realize that the music is different. Some know it’s a different dance but since there is not many possibilities to learn it they simply dance ‘fast tango’.
However – the mood of the Milonga, its cadencia, the steps, the figures are different from Tango though the principles of Tango like directions, rotations, lead, connection still apply – even more, since the dance is faster.
We attempted to organize few Milonga workshops before and some of you even took them. The problem is, that we usually cannot pass beyond basics. This class is to pass the ‘basic Milonga’ point and create a group of dancers – Leaders and Followers – who really feel Milonga music, understand Milonga music and can dance it. Truly dance it.
You might be ‘in Tango’ for 10 years and you might have never truly danced Milonga. There is always a very rewarding for us moment in the Milonga classes when one of you would come over and say – I got it, I FEEL I’m dancing Milonga! I got it!
So what the purpose of the class… For us – to create dancers at the level that we can have a ‘conversation’. You know sort of like learning English or other language. First you happy just be able to say, ‘Hello’, ‘yes-no’ and ‘show me’. Then you happy that you understand tough you cannot say much, then you converse freely though you always retain you own original accent which makes you – you. Same with dance.
We are looking for people who are interested in progressing to the ‘conversation’ level and more. We want to create dancers that will be searched for in the Milonga.
For your enjoyment 3 videos of Milonga performances by Hernan. People love it because once learned can be danced socially in the Milonga.
There is no official drop-ins. However – if you need to ‘try’ one time – you are welcome to do so until the regular 12 couples become definite and so the group will become closed.
You need a partner to attend the class, as we want to keep leader-follower balance to allow the fast progress and equal practice time. However we will be changing partners from time to time as a ‘reality check’ – is it me or my partner who makes it so easy/difficult…
The cost is $168 per couple (4 classes) or $50/session per couple for trail ‘drop in’.
